The Dugdale Charitable Trust began constructing the new school for around 100 children towards the end of 2019
When COVID-19 arrived in Uganda in March 2020, all schools were closed for 83 weeks, making it the second-longest school closure in the world.
With no free education or social welfare system in Uganda, many of the children who are orphans or otherwise vulnerable could not return to school as their parents or caregivers could not afford the fees.
The school director, Daniel Kyaterekera, visited the local villages and encouraged children to return if we could find sponsors in New Zealand to cover fees, uniforms, and stationery.
Maranatha Christian School is located in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. This school has been faithfully fundraising for the David Tyler Nursery and Primary School every year since 2018.
In 2018, Maranatha School, with the help of the Kilmister family, sent several boxes of school uniforms to Uganda. These were warmly received by the senior classes at the David Tyler School. The parcels also included Duplo, books, educational equipment, and toothbrushes.
Between 2018 and 2020, Maranatha raised NZ $10,000, which funded one of the new classrooms at the David Tyler School.
Letters and photos were exchanged in 2018 and 2024 between the children of the two schools, and Maranatha has sponsored several primary school students with their fees.
In 2024, Maranatha fundraised for two keyboards and speakers, which were delivered to the school by the Hockly family when they spent three days st the David Tyler School.
Oxygen Property Management collaborated with the Dugdale Charitable Trust in 2020.
The aim of this joint venture was to fundraise for clean water for the David Tyler School in Uganda. The photo above shows the jerry cans currently used to collect water from a contaminated water hole.
Oxygen Property Management donated $25 for each property rented, raising approximately $1,800, which recently funded a 10,000-liter plastic water tank for the school.
In 2021, the Trust sent additional funds, and the "Brick by Brick" company, which built the school buildings, has been commissioned to construct two 30,000-liter water tanks. The tanks are expected to be operational by early June 2021.
